Having DMX cables of varying lengths can be useful in a lighting setup as it allows you to customize the distances between your lighting fixtures and your DMX controller. We stock 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 and 100 ft cables. If necessary, you can snap cables together to create lengths equal to the combination of two DMX cables.
How many types of DMX cables are there?
It is important to check the specifications of your lighting equipment and controller to determine which type of DMX cable is best suited for your setup.
3 pin DMX cable: This type of DMX cable is the most common and has a male XLR connector on one end and a female XLR connector on the other end. The cable has three pins, which carry the DMX data signal from the controller to the lighting fixtures.
5 pin DMX cable: This type of DMX cable is less common than the 3 pin cable, but is sometimes used in professional lighting setups. It has a male XLR connector on one end and a female XLR connector on the other end, and has five pins instead of three. The extra pins allow for additional data channels or support for alternate data protocols.
Some DMX lights are compatible with both 3-pin and 5-pin cables, but most are compatible with one or the other.
Using 3-Pin and 5-Pin in Your DJ Setup?
No problem! Just use a 3-pin to 5-pin or 5-pin to 3-pin adapter. You can you use easily switch back and forth between 3-pin and 5-pin DMX cables within the same light show.
What materials are the DMX Cables made of?
Conductors: The conductors are the metal wires inside the cable that carry the DMX signal. They are usually made of copper.
Insulation and Jacket: The insulation and jacket materials protect the conductors from damage and prevent interference from outside sources. Common materials used for insulation and jacket include polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
In addition to these main components, DMX cables may also have a shield to further protect the signal from interference. Shielding materials include braided copper wire, aluminum foil, or a combination of both.
Advantages of Using High End DMX Cables
Durable - Constructed to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. They are designed to prevent damage and ensure a longer lifespan for the cables.
Reliable - A high quality DMX cable will ensure that the DMX signal is transmitted reliably between the controller and lighting fixtures, at long lengths and with multiple fixtures.
Wide compatibility - Using DMX cables that meet the industry standards for DMX signal transmission can ensure that they are compatible with a wide range of fixtures.
