For those who prefer the simplicity of a self-powered subwoofer, there's the JBL JRX118SP 18" Compact Powered Subwoofer Cabinet. JBL started with the same woofer used in the non-powered JRX118S and added a specially designed amplifier with 500W (peak) and 300W (continuous) power output. The stereo crossover network is great for systems with EON or other powered satellite speakers. Peak limiter that protects the amplifier and speaker from clipping.

I bought 2 of these used from a friend last summer, and so far they are good. I bought them for $400 for the pair! For that price it's a steal. But the truth is I'd never pay full retail price for them. My friend and I used them together with 2 EAW LA325 Dual 15"s and they couldn't keep up. After about 3-4 times of use and much time of just sitting in a warehouse he practically gave them to me. I use them with pole mounted 15" 2ways in much smaller rooms and they work good for that. Since I've acquired them, they've been used about 20 times. So far I've had to replace one of the power switches and last time I took them out I had to tighten all the screws on the back plates and take them out to tighten the internal screws. As they seem to shaken themselves loose. Im guessing this is because the wood cabinet isn't as thick as an 18" subwoofer should be. Greatly to my surprise they aren't all that heavy either. I can easily carry one of them with one arm. <br /> Bottom line I feel like you're paying for the name.
