What Is a Powered Subwoofer and Why Do You Need One?
A powered subwoofer, sometimes called an active subwoofer, includes a built-in amplifier and internal signal processing. This eliminates the need for external power amps, crossovers, and complex wiring. For mobile DJs and gigging musicians, that simplicity is a major advantage.
With a powered subwoofer, setup is faster and cleaner. You connect your audio signal, plug into power, and you’re ready to go. Fewer components mean less gear to transport, fewer cables to troubleshoot, and more confidence when setting up under time pressure. For events where reliability matters, powered subwoofers are the clear choice.
How to Choose the Best Powered Subwoofer for Your Gigs
Choosing the right powered subwoofer depends on the types of events you work, the size of your venues, and how much gear you can realistically transport. Below are the most important factors to consider.
- Driver Size has a major impact on output and low-frequency extension. Twelve-inch powered subwoofers are compact, lightweight, and easy to transport, making them ideal for small venues, ceremonies, and solo mobile DJs. Fifteen-inch and eighteen-inch subs provide more volume and deeper bass, making them better suited for larger rooms, outdoor events, and live bands.
- Power and SPL - Pay attention to both peak and continuous power ratings, as well as maximum SPL measured in decibels. Higher power and SPL ratings mean more headroom, allowing your system to stay clean and controlled even at higher volumes. This is especially important for bass-heavy music and energetic live performances.
- Weight and Portability - Powered subwoofers can be heavy, especially larger 18-inch models. If you frequently load in and out by yourself, look for subs with well-designed handles, optional caster wheels, and efficient Class D amplifiers that reduce overall weight without sacrificing output.
- DSP and Presets - Many modern powered subwoofers include onboard DSP with factory presets, EQ options, and delay settings. Some models also support cardioid configurations when using multiple subs, helping control low-frequency energy on stage and improve clarity for performers.
- Connectivity - XLR and 1/4-inch inputs are standard on most powered subs, allowing easy integration with mixers and powered speakers. Some advanced models offer networking or app-based control, making it easier to manage larger systems and fine-tune performance across an entire rig.

FAQs
Can I run a powered subwoofer with any brand of tops?
Yes. You can mix powered subwoofers with speakers from different manufacturers as long as output levels and crossover points are compatible. That said, pairing certain subs from the same brand (such as the RCF SUB 15AX / RCF SUB 18AX) include built-in presets designed for tops from the full RCF line, right out of the box.
How heavy are most powered subwoofers?
Weight varies by size and design. Twelve-inch powered subs typically weigh around 50–60 pounds, while larger 18-inch models can exceed 90 pounds. If you work alone, features like side handles and caster kits can make a big difference.
Will one powered subwoofer be enough for most events?
It really depends on the sub. One very powerful subwoofer can easily output more than two less powerful subs. While nothing beats real-world testing, one of the best specifications to look for is the SPL (sound pressure level). When comparing SPL's, it's important to understand that decibels (dB) are given in a logarithmic scale. So you can't add up the SPL values of your speakers to get the total SPL. Instead, doubling the subs adds only +3dB to your total sound (up to +6dB depending on placement and coupling). So one 136dB sub will give you as much, or more, sound than two 130dB subs.
