Powered PA Speakers
You could be running sound at a packed nightclub, setting up for a wedding reception, or building a portable rig for mobile gigs; whatever the situation, your PA speakers are the foundation of your entire sound system. At KPODJ, we carry a wide selection of powered PA speakers from industry-leading brands like RCF, Yamaha, FBT, Electro-Voice, LD Systems and more, giving DJs, musicians, and sound professionals the tools they need to deliver powerful, crystal-clear audio at any venue.
Why Powered PA Speakers Are a Must
Powered PA speakers (also called active speakers) feature built-in amplifiers, eliminating the need for external amp racks and the guesswork of matching power ratings. Everything you need to get loud and stay clean is already inside the cabinet. For mobile DJs and working musicians, this means faster setup times, fewer cables, and less gear to transport.
Modern powered speakers also include onboard DSP (digital signal processing), offering EQ presets, limiter protection, and crossover tuning without external processors. Whether you’re running a pair of tops for a corporate event or building a full portable PA system for an outdoor show, powered speakers simplify your workflow without sacrificing sound quality.
At KPODJ, our team has used these speakers at real gigs, dealt with real-world issues, and knows which models deliver when it counts. We're here to help find the right speaker for your needs. And due to convenience and total cost, we recommend going with powdered speakers over passive speakers in all applications where you have access to power near the placement of each speaker. We only recommend passive speakers for installs when it's easier to find power near a rack of amplifiers instead of near each speaker.
How to Choose the Right Powered PA Speakers
Choosing the right powered PA speakers depends on venue size, audience expectations, and how portable your setup needs to be. Here are the key factors to consider:
- Driver size: 8" and 10" speakers work well for small rooms and monitoring, while 12" and 15" models provide more low-end and higher SPL for medium-to-large venues.
- SPL output: Peak SPL ratings (measured in dB) indicate how loud a speaker can get before distortion.
- Weight and portability: Lightweight Class-D powered speakers (like Yamaha’s DXR series and RCF's ART series) are ideal for solo load-ins.
- DSP and presets: Built-in tuning modes allow quick optimization for mains, monitors, or pole-mounted use.
- Connectivity: Look for combo XLR/TRS inputs, link outputs for daisy-chaining, and Bluetooth streaming if it fits your workflow.
- Build quality: Road-ready cabinets, reinforced corners, and steel grilles matter when your speakers are constantly on the move.
For larger venues or outdoor stages, line array speaker systems provide longer throw and more even coverage. Our team can help design a scalable system that grows with your needs.

FAQs
Do powered PA speakers need a separate amplifier or mixer?
No. Powered speakers include built-in amplifiers, allowing you to connect directly from a DJ controller, mixer, or Bluetooth-enabled device. Plug in, set levels, and you’re ready to go. It's ideal to run your sound through a mixer with a pre-amp before running signal into your powered speaker, but you should NOT use an external amplifier.
How do I know what size speaker I need?
If you're using a powered subwoofer with your speakers, we usually recommend 10in speakers to pair with 12in or 15in subwoofers, 12in speakers to pair with 15in or 18in subwoofers, and 15in speakers to pair with 18in or 21in subwoofers. Generally speaking: the bigger the event, the bigger the speaker. If you plan to use your speakers without subs or plan to do outdoor events, we usually recommend 15in speakers. But there is a lot of nuance to picking the right size speakers. So if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to a KPODJ sales rep.
Can powered PA speakers be used as floor monitors?
Yes. Many models feature monitor-angle cabinets and DSP presets designed for stage monitoring. Speakers like the Yamaha DXR and RCF ART series handle both front-of-house and monitor duties with ease.
What’s the advantage of line array speakers?
Line array speakers are designed to combine the output of multiple speaker cabinets to project sound farther and more evenly across very large audiences, reducing volume drop-off and hot spots. They’re ideal for festivals, concerts, and deep venues where traditional point-source speakers fall short. We usually don't recommend line arrays unless you're going to stack at least three speakers per side (a minimum of a 6pc system). We always recommend using powerful subwoofers in additional to your line array speakers. If you're looking for a similar effect of a very wide and even coverage area, but for smaller size audiences, we recommend column array systems instead. Column arrays are typically more expensive than traditional 2-way powered speakers for a similar output, but they have a wider coverage area and many prefer their slim look.
